Life Lessons From Jesus

Matt 5:13-16

With that in mind let me ask a question… How are you influencing those around you?

This morning I am going to read a passage that is all about influence.  Its found in Matt 5:13-16…

How does salt and light apply to discipleship?

I want to cover 3 areas that will lead us to not only disciple those around us but has the power to change the world.

Why We Need Discipleship – V13a & 14a

This statement would lead one to think the world needs salt because it is corrupt and light because it is dark? Has the world has lost its savior and its light?

The early 1900s British Evangelist G Campbell Morgan said this about this passage… “Jesus, looking out over the multitudes of His day, saw the corruption, the disintegration of life at every point its break-up, its spoilation; and, because of His love of the multitudes, He knew that the thing they needed most was salt in order that the corruption should be arrested. He saw them also wrapped in gloom, sitting in darkness, groping amid mists and fogs. He knew that they needed, above everything else, the irradiation of the pathway, the illumination of all things; that they needed light.”

Gen 6:5-6 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Ps 14:2-3  The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.  They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.

2 Tim 3:13-14 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

We go from war to greater war, from crime to greater crime, immorality to greater immorality, from perversion to greater perversion… We are not getting better and better we are getting worse and worse.  If we will not disciple the next generation who will? If there was ever a time when we need to be discipline its now!

This need leads us to our next point…

How To Do Discipleship – V13a & 14a

Both verse 14 and verse 15 begin with the personal pronoun YOU!   Which makes it really read like this… “You are the only salt of the earth” & “You are the only light of the world”.

Our problem today is we think its somebody else’s job!  When I was first got a job in a company with a union I wanted someone to help me with something but they told me that it wasn’t their job… I think we have taken this thinking into the church… We think discipleship is always some else’s job! This is what Jesus means by this word YOU! It’s the churches Job to be salt and light! Which means that it your Job to be salt and light!

Rom 10:14-15 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?  And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:  “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,  Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

The reason why this is happening around us is because the world is missing YOU! Its missing your saltiness! Its missing your light!

Let me give you an example of what I am talking about… Take Carl & Cindi and remove them from our church… Now take Randy and Marsha and remove them from the church… Then take Brian and Alma and remove them from the church Then remove Mike and Ann and remove them from the church… Are we loosing our light? Have we not lost a great deal of our saltiness?  So it is with all Christians in the world! The world is growing darker by the day because we (the church) and we (individually) are not being salt and light to the world!  Instead we (in the church) and we (individually) are becoming more like the world!!!

What are we to do about this most horrible situation? We going to read on!

Becoming A Living Disciple – V14b-16

This proposition is very simple… Get out there and influence the world around you

Listen to what the great preacher Martyn Lloyd Jones said…  Most competent historians are agreed in saying that what undoubtedly saved this country from a revolution such as was experienced in France at the end of the eighteenth century was nothing but the Evangelical Revival. This was not because anything was done directly, but because masses of individuals had become Christian, and were living this better life and had this higher outlook. The whole political situation was affected, and the great Acts of Parliament which were passed in the last century were mostly due to the fact that there were such large numbers of individual Christians to be found in this land…

But what is the result? No one can dispute it. The result is that we are living in a society which is much more immoral than it was fifty years ago, in which vice and lawbreaking and lawlessness are rampant. Is it not clear that you cannot do these things except in the biblical way? Though we try to bring them about directly by applying principles, we find that we cannot do so. The main trouble is that there are far too few Christian people, and that those of us who are Christian are not sufficiently salt. By that I do not mean aggressive, I mean Christian in the true sense.

James 1:22-25 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.  But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.

We are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we are to represent God’s presents on earth… We are to be the salt that permeates and the light that penetrates the rotten dark world around us! IF we are not willing to do so Jesus is saying we are good for nothing!

So what is Jesus desire for you today?

Let your light shine so God will be glorified, in the world and in you!

How will that happen?…

1.       He must be in you!

2.       He must transform you!

3.       He must come out of you!

So I ask you one last time…

Is Christ in you? Has Christ transformed you? Is Christ what comes out of you?

This is the only way to change and disciple those around us!
